A Lot Like You
“A Lot Like You” by Bernadette Birney
Bear in mind that I’m asking you to hold a paradox. So, yes–I actually do know that you are special. I know that I am special, too. Really, truly. We are all distinct little snowflakes, no two exactly alike. I believe that. I do.
I also believe in a sacred responsibility, and subscribe to Martha Graham’s point of view that, “There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time. This expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium; and be lost. The world will not have it.” Yes!
I saw my first snow flake 15 years ago on top of the Swiss Alps, Switzerland. I was wearing a dark purple jacket standing on top of one of the hilltop of the magical mountain when it started snowing. I was so excited watching the white fluff falling to the ground, and as I look over my right shoulder I saw this amazing shapes that I saw in postcards, storybooks, carved into ornaments hung at Christmas tree. It’s real I exclaimed. So this is snow flake. And it took on different shapes each time I watched it fell on my purple jacket. So it’s real! No two are exactly alike. Even the twin pine trees covered in snow. And so are we. We are whole and complete just the way we are. Perfect!
